So, I promised a couple weeks ago that I'd show what the yard turns into with the violet infestation. Here ) is a good indication of what's to come.

The happy thing? There were two small areas I decided to try some test patches of grass seed with...

Glee! )

Still waiting for the herbs to poke their heads out of the soil, but that probably won't happen for a few more days yet. *keeps staring at dirt*

Does anyone have a staff I could borrow for Thursday evening?

Knees, I haz dem.

Today for Earth Day (okay, so I was planning on doing it anyway), I tackled the flower bed again in an attempt to kill off more of the violets and other denizens that I do not wish to be squatting in it. Since we've still been getting below freezing nights I haven't been able to plant any seeds in it yet, though it looks like tonight will likely be the last night of that for at least a week or more. Possibly the last of the season at this point. I ripped out many more root-balls, tilled up the soil good, and then wet it down with plant vitamin water ("organic" liquid plant food) to try and feed up the soil a bit.

Of course now my back is cranky and my knees have the opinion that I should please to die in a fire, but the bed should be in reasonable shape to do a bit of planting next week. (The weather is supposed to be damp for the next few days, and while they might like that, I don't care to be out in it. I'll deal with hauling a watering can.)

Yay productivity!

Now where did I put that bottle of whiskey...

Awwwww...

Goodnight, Dune

Yes. I'm a geek.

Since I've been wandering around today sniffling about this and watching reruns on Netflix, I thought I'd write things out a bit.

It's been mentioned once or twice that I'm something of a Doctor Who fan. Have been all of my life. My dad and I used to watch them every week when I was little. It shaped a lot of who I became, in a strange sort of way. Particularly one character, Miss Sarah Jane Smith. She was my hero, and I kinda wanted to be her when I grew up. I still kinda do. She was smart, self-assured, strong, and could hold her own against the Doctor, all the while being sweet, polite, and just plain a lovely person. She was always my favorite of the Doctor's companions. She was the companion who was independent and strong all on her own, and had a charisma and charm that none of the others had. To me, she was the perfect companion, and a good model of someone I wanted to emulate. (No small task for someone who normally has no use for character idolization.)

When I finally was able to catch up on the new seasons in the last couple of years (haven't had much tv access for a couple of years) I completely fangirled when I saw the episode "School Reunion". I squeed out loud and may have done the excited clapping while making "eee" noises. I was riveted the entire episode and got more than a little misty-eyed at the end. She was almost unchanged from the wonderful character I had grown up with, and I drank in the episode like it was the most glorious and rare wine.

From all accounts, Elisabeth Sladen was as sweet and wonderful in her real life off the sets. Today we learned the sad news that she lost her battle with cancer at the age of 63. I've never really had the death of a celebrity who I've never met affect me before, but I've found myself crying over her loss. She was a special woman, who touched so many of our lives very deeply. Her portrayal of Sarah Jane gave so many young girls the confidence and belief in themselves that they, too, could be strong and smart and capable, and the world is a little darker tonight because of her loss.

Good-night, dear lady. We will miss you very much.

Rest in peace, Elisabeth. You were always my favorite.

OH GOD CALL THE SWAT TEAM! SOMEBODY HAS A.... umbrella?!

Srsly, ppl. WTF?

Edit: A video that shows the umbrella. 'Cause yeah, it TOTALLY looks like a gun. Ya know, aside from being the wrong shape and color and looking nothing like a rifle except for being the same length...

EEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Brattle Theater is doing a double-feature on Monday for The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. I'm not missing this again! (Read: has just bought tickets for boy and me for the 7 pm showing.) *does happy dance*

This will be my first time seeing either of them on the big screen. *festers*

If anyone else is interested/available, have a link.

New tech, dreams of a fancy library, and my geek hanging out just a little: All Hail Wotan!

I have to say, there is something amusing about playing with one's technology while listening to angry Industrial music. Also? I can't even say how gleeful I am to have managed to get myself a decent bit of tech for 50% off. *is pleased with self*

Now, I go eat lunch, since it's about 4 o'clock and this morning's pancakes have long since worn off.

Dear allergies~ GO AWAY! *sigh* I hate allergies. They make me fuzzy-headed.

Finally got around to sucking it up and sending the medical respec email for Endgame. Now to learn how to not kill myself with a staff and get better with the aim. The bars had to go, or I was going to keep running into fights. I am also pleased to be free of the bow, as I really didn't like it. So, now I work on redoing my combat abilities. Also, getting myself a staff before June would probably be a good idea.

Got my registration for Relay completed finally. If anyone would like to join our team, please do! We're very small and apparently at least two members will be helping run the event, so we need folks who can walk. We'd love to have you, even if you can only come for a couple of hours!

Today I learned that I am perhaps not in good enough shape anymore to combine the activities of dog-walking, poi practice, and gardening all in the same day. Especially a day that includes enough pollen to make my lungs cry. Very much with the sore and the achy tonight.

However, I did get two small test patches of grass-seed put down, figured out how to open and close the composting drum ), and got my herb seeds into their container ). I also may have begged for a return trip to the greenhouse for the orange mint that has been haunting my dreams for the last few days. So, now I have a wee collection of plants growing and hopefully soon to be growing carefully stored on the porch for the night (of course, as I just planted them, it's supposed to get below freezing tonight). Yay plants, though!

Now to go work on getting the next post for Living Plaid written and ready to put up tomorrow. I'm pleased that the Amazon storefront thingy that I put up had a sale before it had even been up for 24 hours. Hopefully this is a good sign! Tomorrow I should also go in the quest for the new printer, while it's on sale for damned near 50% off! Oh, to be able to do my own prints again!

Ya know that project I've mentioned off and on over at the Studio blog? I finally decided to release it today )

I hate this economy. Can I be successfully self-employed now, please??!
spiralngphoenix: (Gardening)
Spent a little more than I had intended on garden supplies, and may have changed my original plan for the flower bed, but I will also have my own basil, chives, and cilantro this year! The extra cost came from the decision to try a grass experiment, along with a sudden attack of container gardening. I'd originally intended some seeds, maybe a pre-started flower or two, and some fertilizer, but then I realized that potting soil and a reasonable size plastic container was pretty cheap.

Tomorrow, I go play in the dirt. :)

Printenstein cometh.

Now? OH CRAP IT'S TUESDAY! (The problem with long-term unemployment is that you do start to forget what day of the week it is.) Quick shower and then off to walk Prince Fluffybutt.
