This morning I awoke to a strange sound, and peered out my window to see what new mischief was going on at the construction site. To my startlement, they seemed to be preparing to perform some strange and eldritch rite. Someone had strung red ribbons across the mouths of the bridge, and the denizens of Pepperell were slowly gathering around it on either side. Soon, someone began chanting and muttering, and then a gunshot echoed through the morning air. More chanting whispered across on the wind, culminating at last in three large vehicles carrying several elderly men and women being driven across the across and through it's gaping maws to the cheers of the younger folk. Clearly they were sacrifices to the Bridge God.

The good news is that the thrice-damned bridge is finally open. The bad news is that the bloody morons are now feeling compelled to drive back and forth over the friggin' thing beeping their damned car horns for some reason. Probably some other ritual to appease the Bridge God and keep it from unleashing the hideous monsters that live in the depths of the river below...

Not allowing an historical site be "modernized", I can totally see. My mother was a member of the Epping Historical Society, and I grew up in the Historical District of town. I love that the town banded together to make them recreate the covered bridge.

I'm a little unnerved by the fact that the town identity seems to be entirely centered on that bridge... (The whole big thing in September? Things like that are what pushes it into the realm of a little creepy for me.)
